NBA Top Shot in 2025–26: On-Chain Permanence and the Rookie Era

NBA Top Shot — Dapper Labs’ licensed NBA collectible platform — entered its sixth season in October 2025 with the most consequential technical change since launch: every Top Shot collectible now comes with on-chain permanence.

What “on-chain permanence” means

Announced jointly by the NBA, NBPA and Dapper Labs for the 2025–26 season, the change moves the video highlight, artwork and metadata of each Moment onto a decentralized network — meaning the collectible remains independently retrievable and verifiable even if the platform itself changes. For a category still defined by the F1 Delta Time shutdown lesson, it’s the most direct answer yet to the “what if the operator disappears” question.

The rookie era

This season leans into the traditional-card playbook: headline partnerships with top rookies including Cooper Flagg and Yang Hansen, debut digital autograph inscriptions, and 1-of-1 signature collectibles. Fewer than 5,000 rookie collectibles per headliner exist — scarcity mirroring physical rookie cards.

New drop formats

Packs now come in boxes (multiple packs, at least one guaranteed insert) and cases (more packs, more guaranteed inserts), with readily-available pack rips that replenish, Trade Ticket packs returning, and Trade-In Auctions for premium Moments.

Where the market actually is

Top Shot’s February–March 2021 peak topped US$225M in monthly volume — numbers that now look anomalous. Sales since 2023 have consolidated to realistic levels, and the 2025–26 season positions the product as a long-term licensed collectible rather than a speculative trade.
